What the Napa earthquake taught me

A few weeks after the big Napa earthquake, John Laverty the builder, told me he had seen several of the Napa projects we had done together and that they had held up great in the shaking. That was good to hear. Year after year, we spend our effort designing and building extra strength into these houses by calling for extra plywood nailed tight to strengthen walls and metal straps nailed off to bridge any framing joints that will undergo major tension during a shake. We do all of this, house after house, for that singular moment that we know will [...]

Features I want in my next house

By |2019-04-25T17:05:49+00:00June 24th, 2013|Elements of Design, Thinking like an architect, Uncategorized|Comments Off on Features I want in my next house

I've seen some cool stuff in houses in my day. And by that I don't mean the high-tech things like computerized light switches or the ability to turn on my hot tub from my smart phone while I'm in an airport. I suspect that these gizmos are destined for obsolescence, like the abandoned intercoms you see mounted on walls in forty year old houses. I tend to be more impressed by the simple things that will be useful and enjoyed for countless generations.   Medicine closet Like a medicine cabinet, but much larger. I visited a client's home that had [...]

A paint color by any other name

By |2019-04-25T17:06:35+00:00March 21st, 2012|Elements of Design, Uncategorized|Comments Off on A paint color by any other name

It seemed like it should be pretty simple to select colors for inside my house. Compared to the other decisions we had made so far in our remodel – like agonizing over the nuances of our kitchen cabinets – it would be easy to select some hues from a Kelly Moore fan deck. Then reality happened. I was using our kitchen remodel as a reason for doing a long overdue color makeover of our major rooms. Some extra accent lighting would be added, but it was mostly about new colors everywhere. The bedrooms and baths would be spared [...]

The Great Kitchen Remodel of 2011

By |2019-04-25T17:06:36+00:00August 7th, 2011|Elements of Design, Uncategorized|Comments Off on The Great Kitchen Remodel of 2011

Long before my current kitchen remodel, there was the Great Family Room Addition of ’98 in which my wife and I and our two small children passed the rainy season with the back corner of our house missing its walls and roof. Instead of risking our hardwood floor, we chose to stop work on our do-it-yourself addition for the winter and hunker down against the cold rains by covering the back of the house with a massive sheet of clear plastic sloped toward the backyard. We chose clear plastic because this was our Family Room and it would [...]

Aging in place

By |2010-01-27T06:11:17+00:00January 27th, 2010|Elements of Design, Uncategorized|Comments Off on Aging in place

There are ways we can make our homes ready for us to “age in place” and still look like a gorgeous house. “Aging in place” is the name given to people remaining comfortably in their homes even as their bodies weaken with age. Many of these accommodating aspects can be built-in and seem so “normal” as to be invisible. It can start with a simple idea, like laying out a two story house so that there is both an upstairs and a downstairs Master Bedroom. The downstairs version is usually the “minor” master, but should at least meet the standards [...]

Fireplaces: New rules

By |2008-12-26T22:14:07+00:00December 26th, 2008|Elements of Design, Uncategorized|Comments Off on Fireplaces: New rules

It seems everybody has heard that the rules for fireplaces have changed. They have. The new regs go something like this: If you already have a wood burning fireplace you will get to keep using it, except on “spare the air days” as declared by the Bay Area Air Quality Management Board. Benicia gets its mandates for fireplace rules from this agency. For new construction you can still install wood burning devices (it’s true, at least for now) but they will have to be environmentally friendly “EPA certified” models. These EPA models can be decked out with all the trappings [...]
